Mobility Scheme to Improve Access to Bracknell Shopping
17/09/04
A new scheme for Bracknell town centre to give shoppers with mobility difficulties greater freedom, independence and choice was approved this week with a proposed opening scheduled for Spring 2004.
Proposals for the Shopmobility scheme have been developed jointly by Bracknell Forest Borough Council, the Bracknell Regeneration Partnership (BRP) and Bracknell Forest Voluntary Action. The scheme is the latest joint initiative by the Borough Council and BRP aimed at improving the vitality of Bracknell’s existing town centre retail environment in the run up to the proposed 750m regeneration project.
Located in Unit 2 Crossway, the Shopmobility scheme will provide both manual and motorised scooters for hire and use in the town centre. The scheme will be available for a small fee to anyone needing a bit extra help in getting around the town centre, whether they are an older person, have a disability or temporary injury. There will be four new disabled parking bays specifically for the use of the Shopmobility scheme at the rear of the unit.
Bracknell Regeneration Partnership (BRP) is providing financial support to the scheme together with the use of the retail unit and car parking rent free. The Borough Council, which has approved the scheme, are funding the refurbishment of the unit and providing continuing revenue funding.
Cllr Mrs Mary Ballin, Executive Member for Planning and Transportation, said:
“Shopmobility has proved a great success in town centres throughout the UK and I am delighted that we can bring the scheme to Bracknell. We are keen to ensure that shopping in Bracknell is accessible to all members of the local community, both today and following the comprehensive regeneration of the town centre. ”
David Gregory, Development Manager for Bracknell Regeneration Partnership, said:
“The Shopmobility scheme reflects our commitment to providing excellent service to all shoppers in Bracknell, in partnership with the Borough Council. This commitment is integral to our proposed regeneration scheme but is also a priority in the short-term to medium term as we prepare for the comprehensive redevelopment of the town centre.”
The service will be run by a full-time manager and part time assistant manager and operate from 10am until 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday every week. The Bracknell Shopmobility Management Committee will be established to oversee the scheme independently and will become registered as a Charity. Membership will be drawn from representatives of the funding partners, local voluntary groups and town centre amenities.
The Committee will also be looking to local businesses and retailers for continuing support and fundraising for scooters and equipment.
