Students design town centre with young shoppers in mind

Students from Meadow Vale Primary School have visited the town centre exhibition as part of a geography exercise to design the town centre they would like to shop in!

Sixty Year 5 students from the Moordale Avenue school visited the town centre exhibition to find out about plans for the proposed 750 million regeneration of Bracknell town centre so they could use the information back in the classroom to design a town centre of their own.

The 10 and 11-year-olds spent a morning in the exhibition learning about how town centres are designed, the plans for Bracknell’s new mixed-use development and the jobs involved in making a project of this scale come to life.

They also had the opportunity to quiz experts from Bracknell Regeneration Partnership and Bracknell Forest Borough Council about the regeneration scheme and what it means for residents of the borough.

The youngsters then audited the kinds of shops currently in the town and questioned shoppers in the town centre about what kinds of shops they would like to see in the regenerated centre so they could design their own new town centre back in the classroom.

Helen Barnett from Bracknell Regeneration Partnership, said: “We are always delighted to see young people taking an interest in what happens in their community and the students from Meadow Vale Primary School have obviously given a lot of thought to the regeneration scheme.

“The students’ ideas will help us develop our proposals for the plans to regenerate Bracknell town centre and we are looking forward to seeing their completed projects.”
